During the winter months, the weather may not permit you to ride much if at all. It’s probably safe to say that your bike is stored away for the most part. When you are finally ready to ride, here is helpful checklist to make sure that your bike is road ready after a winter break.
- Check your motorcycle for mildew and rust.
- Clean it. Remove built up grease, insects, and filth that could hide areas that might need more maintenance. You may want to give it a waxing so that the bike is easier to remove dirt on your next cleaning.
- Lube and adjust the chain if you have one. Check the oil level. Add and/or replace it as required.
- Examine your tires for dry-rot aging, tread wear, and pressure. Signs of cracks or too little tread mean the tire will need to be replaced.
- Check the headlight(s), turn signals, brake lights, horn, and kill switch for proper operation.
- Check your gas level.
- Check the engine and/or transmission oil level. Change the oil and filter if at the proper service interval.
- Inspect and test both brakes. Master cylinders and calipers can seize up during storage. Also, check the brake fluid levels.
- Check the battery fluid levels before charging the battery.
- Check the radiator coolant level if you have a liquid cooled bike.
- Operate the throttle and clutch, turn the handlebars to make sure they turn efficiently and correctly, and check that the kickstand is working properly.
Thanks and ride safe!
